As you are no doubt aware, doors, whether they are exterior entrance doors or interior doors, can be an important focal point for your house's decorating scheme. Whether you are building a house or just remodeling, it is worth considering all of the possibilities that different doors represent.
Entrance Doors
Entrance doors are, literally, the gateway to your home. Since they are visible outside (by everyone, and not just guests who like you and will tell you how much they love your doors just to be nice, while inwardly, they are laughing at you. Laughing.), entrance doors should be especially attractive and well crafted. Mahogany is a perfect choice for entrance doors – it is a beautiful color that readily accepts stain. Mahogany's figured grain offers subtle and beautiful variation, and whatever your vision for an entrance door, it is likely that you will find it in mahogany.
Entrance doors come in such a variety of styles, there is little question that you will find what you are looking for. Even if you do not your door to have inlaid glass, consider installing a transom above the door – it gives the entrance a more inviting, less imposing look, and allows light to come through to your home's interior. Transoms, like entrance doors, are also available in a variety of styles.
Custom Interior Doors
It way well be that you cannot find an interior door that matches your decorating needs – whether it is because you need an irregularly sized door, or simply because you want something that is truly original, you will need a custom interior door. This is not a problem, and though it is a little more expensive, you should carefully consider this option if you think you need it. After all – you might use a door a dozen times per day, which adds up to over 4,000 times per year! Because interior doors do not need to be as sturdy as their exterior counterparts.
Knotty Doors
Knots are formed in wood when a tree develops side-branches, and give wood a distinct artistic look. Often especially present in alder, knotty doors can make interesting points of accent in a room. While knots do affect the structural integrity of a piece of wood, this is really only a concern if the wood will be under a large amount of stress: either bearing a heavy load or having to withstand shear stress. Since interior doors, by design, are not placed under this kind of stress, you are free to utilize knotty doors without fear of catastrophic failure.
Knotty doors look great in a rustic-type context, so if you are leaning in that direction, you should look at some knotty doors, possibly made from alder, as alder is a very versatile, fairly inexpensive wood that can be stained to resemble many other types of wood, and has naturally insect-repelling properties.
Ultimately, every option should be considered during the design process, so that you can be truly satisfied with the execution of your vision.
